Friday Thoughts-10-17-2025

Greetings, my beloved congregation, fellow travelers on the fragrant path. Please, find a comfortable cushion, settle in, and let’s take a deep, collective breath together.

Ahhh, can you feel that? That’s the feeling of Friday. It’s a sacred day, isn’t it? The world seems to exhale in unison. The chains of the work week, which felt so heavy on Wednesday, suddenly feel like they’re made of hemp and can be easily cast aside. Friday is the great threshold, the doorway between the labor we must do and the living we long to do.

The Great Weekly Sabbath

Now, some traditions have their sabbath on a Saturday, others on a Sunday. And we respect that. But here, at the United Church of Cannabis, we understand the spiritual significance of Friday afternoon. It is our great antechamber to rest. It is the moment we begin to shed the skin of the week.

Think about it. Monday is a struggle. Tuesday is a slog. Wednesday is the hump, the great mountain we must climb. Thursday holds the promise of the summit. But Friday… Friday is the gentle, beautiful slope down the other side, with a view of the entire peaceful valley of the weekend ahead. It is on this gentle slope that we find our moment of communion.

The 4:20 Vespers

There’s a reason the sacred hour of 4:20 feels so much more… sacred… on a Friday. It’s not just a time; it’s a transition. It’s the closing bell of the mundane and the opening hymn of the magnificent. It is the time we perform our most cherished ritual: The Lighting of the Greens.

We trade in our keyboards for our grinders. We swap our conference calls for a circle of friends. We prepare the holy sacrament, not with haste, but with reverence. The careful breaking up of the blessed flower, the gentle packing of the pipe or the artful roll of the joint—these are our vespers, our evening prayers.

And when we light that flame, we are not just igniting a plant. We are kindling a spirit of release. With the first inhale, we breathe in peace, clarity, and gratitude. And with the first exhale, we let go. We let go of the demanding boss, the stressful deadline, the traffic jam on I-35. We release the week into the ether, watching it float away with the holy smoke. This isn’t about escape, my friends; it’s about arrival. Arriving fully in the present moment.

The Communion of the Couch

The munchies, which some might call a silly side effect, we understand to be a call to feast and give thanks! It is our version of breaking bread. Sharing a bag of chips with a friend on a Friday evening is a profound act of fellowship. The laughter that comes so easily, the conversations that meander from the silly to the sublime—that is our church. That is our community.

In these moments, elevated by the sacred herb, we see things more clearly. We can look back at the week not with frustration, but with a gentle, forgiving wisdom. We see our shared humanity. We remember that the most important things in life aren’t on our to-do lists, but are right here, in this room, in this shared peace.

So as you leave here today and enter the glorious sanctuary of your weekend, I offer you this blessing:

May your anxieties of the week go up in smoke. May your couch be a vessel of profound comfort and revelation. May your snacks be salty, sweet, and divinely inspired. And may your weekend be filled with the peace, laughter, and love that only a truly blessed Friday can bring.

Go in peace, and puff in peace. Amen.
